During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) objects with archaic shapes were collected by emperors and Chinese scholars who shared the same interest for antiquarianism. The lacquer artist of this cup would have been able to copy similar examples from the <i> Imperially Ordained Mirror of Antiquities Prepared in the Xiqing Hall</i>, a catalogue of the imperial collection compiled in 1749 and illustrated with woodblock prints.","physicalDescription":"Red lacquer cup in the form of a <i>jue</i> pouring vessel, carved with archaistic motifs on a square diaper ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved lacquer","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AY5172"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"44","id":"THES49802"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cup (jue)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1800","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Harry Garner and Lady Garner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red lacquer cup, China, Qing dynasty, 1750-1800 ca,","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Kerr, Rose (ed.), Chinese Art and Design: the T.T.
