Newars, the indigenous community of the Kathmandu Valley, were well known for their skill as jewellers. The fronts of the earrings are decorated with ‘jarao work’, which uses metal cloisons filled with stones and additional filigree wire. This was popular amongst Newar metalworkers during the 18th and 19th centuries.
