Silk production was not native to Egypt and silk weaving of this kind may have been imported and is therefore of particular interest and value. The size of the panel and shoulder band suggest that this may have come from a child's tunic (probably a boy's given the motif), and that he must have come from a high ranking family. The hunting theme includes a mounted figure in the middle surrounded by ibises, fish and duck. These come from the repertoire of late classical art and they represent the hunt as both a sport and a source of food.","physicalDescription":"Square panel and portion of a shoulder band from a tunic, tapestry woven in coloured silks.  The square has a mounted horseman in a circle, with ibises, birds and fish.  In the band are an ibis, two fish, an asp, a quail and heart-shaped blossoms.  The ground of both is green.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Tapestry weave","id":"AAT61981"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tapestry-woven silk","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"}],"styles":[{"text":"Late Antique","id":"AAT20666"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2019LK0069","2012FT8922","2006BA0390","2019LK0073","2019LK0074","2012FP8371","2011FB1914","2019MC9838","2017KA7029"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES306244"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Egypt","id":"x29512"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"300-499","earliest":"0300-01-01","latest":"0499-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"335-1887","id":"O93026"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased for £5 from Caspar Purdon Clarke","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"tapestry woven silk, 400-699, Egyptian; Horseman fish birds ducks, blue-green ground","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Found in an unnamed burial site in Egypt, the tunic made up in Egypt but the silk possibly woven elsewhere","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Caspar Purdon Clarke","id":"C4392"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Horseman","id":"x31467"},{"text":"Ibis","id":"x31829"},{"text":"fish","id":"x30068"},{"text":"duck","id":"AAT132884"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["334-1887"],"accessionNumberNum":"334","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1887,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-13","availableToBook":true}}
