This medal has an obverse only representing the bust of Paul Praun facing right, bearded and bare-headed and wearing a ruff. The medal is taken from a larger clay model by Johann Gregor van der Schardt, dated 1580, now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.\r\n\nCarl (active 1584-d.1609) was a medallist, who arrived in Nuermberg in 1584, although he was probably born in Augsburg and trained there under Balduin Drentwett. He worked for the Court at Dresden, and is recorded as making jewellery in 1590. He struck a series of 300 coins for Bishop Julius of Würzburg in 1597. Like his rival, Valentin Maler, his models were in wax.\r\nThe sitter Paul Praun was an eminent collector of works of art. He came from a successful family of merchants in Nuremberg, and spent much of his life in Italy.","physicalDescription":"Obv. only, bust of Paul Praun facing right, bearded and bare-headed and wearing a ruff.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Carl, Matthäus","id":"A11840"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lead","id":"AAT11022"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lead","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AF5180"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES395561"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":"AAT46025"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1584","earliest":"1584-01-01","latest":"1584-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"4.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"7.4","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'PAVLVS PRAVN Ao 1584'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Obverse","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Obverse"},{"content":"'MC'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"on the truncation","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature","note":"Signature; on the truncation"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Tross. 140 medals and reliefs were purchased from M.
