The technique created an emphatic sense of depth. This is a typical stereoscopic subject. When seen through a stereoscope, the rock highlighted in the water would have been rendered as a fully three-dimensional object. It would also act as a marker in the space around it. Stereoscopes would be provided when such works were exhibited.
