It is typical of a sword of the period and was probably made especially for the gift at the request of the shogun and his advisors. The gift was being talked about from about 1859 so the date of 1860 on the sword seems to fit well with this theory. See also the entry for 263-1865. Although these two swords are dated equivalent to 1860 this is because of the exact date when the reign periods changed.\r\n\r\nAn interesting aspect to this sword is that it has never been re-polished - as has so often happened with other Japanese swords, especially those of greater age. Consequently it displays the exact taste in the final polish of a sword of that period - which may be of great interest to anyone particularly interested in the development and styles of the Japanese sword.","physicalDescription":"Japanese slung sword (tachi) in brown lacquer scabbard; blade signed Kazuhide and dated to 1860.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kazuhide","id":"A11820"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"}],"styles":[{"text":"Late Edo","id":"AAT106658"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2019ME2356","2019ME2358","2019ME2347","2019ME2351","2006AM9405","2006AM9409","2006AM9408","2006AM9407","2006AM9406"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES390033"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES390033"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sword blade","id":""}],[{"text":"Tachi","id":""}],[{"text":"Scabbard","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Fujiwara Kazuhide saku kore o'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Japanese","medium":"","method":"","position":"outer face (omote) of the blade","script":"","translation":"Fujiwara Kazuhide made this","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Japanese; outer face (omote) of the blade"},{"content":"'Man'en gannen hachi gatsu hi'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Japanese","medium":"","method":"","position":"inner face (ura) of the blade","script":"","translation":"A day in the eighth month of the first year of Man'en period (1860); the previous period, Ansei, ended on the 18th day of the thrid month of 1860","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Japanese; inner face (ura) of the blade"}],"objectHistory":"Given by H.
