Brass was cheaper than silver but was often given costly decoration. The elaborate decoration on this piece and other Venetian brassware was influenced by the goods Venetian merchants brought back to the city from the Muslim empires to the east. \r\n\r\nUnlike Northern European brasswork, Venetian brass wares were almost always engraved, as here. The decoration was more extensive, often covering the entire surface of an object. It often incorporated the arabesque pattern, based on a stylised plant with a winding stem. Contemporary Italian artists studied and copied the arabesque ornament and by about 1550 it was beginning to influence designers and craftsmen all over Europe.","physicalDescription":"Tray, circular with straight sides, brass with engraved decoration of concentric bands with central cruciform and radiating cartouches against dense foliate scrollwork, possibly Egypt or Syria, 1500-1550","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, engraved, with traces of gilding","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"}],"styles":[{"text":"Veneto-Saracenic","id":"x35138"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AK2066","2017KC8019"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES367452"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tray","id":"AAT43071"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Egypt","id":"x29512"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Syria","id":"x29200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1500-1550","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1550-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Frank Smith Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"28.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Middle East, Metalwork.
