The central figure is seated on a chair placed upon two coffers inscribed 'Voluntary subscription' for the benefit of 'Percy ye artist' and 'Fund for the benefit of decayed musicians'. \r\n\r\nThe scene is the work of Samuel Percy (ca. 1753-1819), one of the foremost portraitist in wax in the nineteenth century. Percy was an Irish wax-modeller and sculptor, active in England. Around 1777 he went from Dublin to London, where he soon established a thriving practice as a portraitist in wax. By 1786 he had completed 800 historical and contemporary portraits.","physicalDescription":"A group of three musicians in a room, the central figure is seated on a chair placed upon two coffers, inscribed 'Voluntary subscription [sic] for the benefit of 'Percy ye artist', and 'Fund for thee benefit of decayed 'musicians'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Percy, Samuel","id":"A11815"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wax","id":"AAT14585"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wax","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Waxes","id":"THES269037"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE6667"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES396004"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Model","id":"AAT247279"}],[{"text":"Wax","id":"AAT14585"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Dublin","id":"x28811"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century or early 19th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"57.15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of case","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"60.96","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought in 1883.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wax, The Three Musicians, by Samuel Percy, England, late 18th or early 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"List of Objects in the Art Division, South Kensington Museum acquired during the Year 1882. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1883, p. 41"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Ord-Hume, Ruth, \" ‘That ingenious Artist, Mr Percy’: the wax tableaux of Samuel Percy\", in: Sculpture Journal, Vol 21.1, 2012, p. 111"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jonathan Marsden, European Sculpture in the Collection of His Majesty the King, London, 2025, vol.
