The foot of the glass rested in the scallop and the bowl of the glass was immersed in the iced water inside the monteith. Monteiths could be circular or oval and the scallops, which held six or eight glasses, could be either vertical or bent outwards.\r\n\r\nThis particular monteith is made of Sheffield plate, a thin layer of silver fused to a copper core. This material, which provided a cheaper alternative to sterling silver, originated in 1742. Thomas Boulsover (1704-88), a Sheffield cutler, discovered that unequal amounts of silver and copper could be fused by heating under pressure, rolled into sheets of laminated metal and worked like silver. The Sheffield plate industry flourished for approximately one hundred years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Circular with detachable wavy-edged rim; fluted body and moulded foot.
