This cape is hand-embroidered with flowering rose-like sprays worked in ivory silks, using satin and stem stitches. The two-layered cape had become fashionable for babies during the early 19th century, and was usually white or cream coloured. It replaced the traditional bearing cloth, a shawl of richly coloured fabric, usually in bright colours such as red or blue and lavishly trimmed with lace or braid.","physicalDescription":"Christening cape of pale grey twilled wool lined throughout with pale grey silk, the edges piped in ivory-coloured satin. The garment is hand-embroidered with flowering rose-like sprays worked in ivory silks, using satin and stem stitches. The turn-down collar and the shorter cape are both of silk-lined self fabric embroidered to match the longer (yoked) cape. The garment fastens at the front with hooks and eyes, and a pair of ivory-coloured silk ribbons at the neck front.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool twill, embroidered with silks and lined with silk","categories":[{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006AU3563"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES323886"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Christening Cape","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1903-1904","earliest":"1903-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"T.260-1990","id":"O367300"},"association":"Source"}],"creditLine":"Given by Joyce Pepler","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"97.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre back below collar","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Worn by the donor, née Constance Joyce Murray Senior (born 3/12/1903) who was christened at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill by her father the Reverend T H Senior on 06/01/1904.
