(1741 –1807)\r\nBorn in Switzerland, made prints in Italy and England\r\nPrintmaking activity: 1760 –1781\r\nAngelica Kauffman had an extremely successful career as a painter. She began making etchings in Italy in the 1760s, under the tutelage of her friend, Johann Reiffenstein. In Italy, Kauffman made etchings after the Old Masters, but she\r\nalso created portraits of patrons and artist friends. When Kauffman moved to England in 1766, she took advantage of London’s booming print market to sell her impressions. Her engagement with the medium intensified, and her etchings developed in their stylistic competence and their imaginative subject matter.","physicalDescription":"Black and white portrait of Winckelmann writing in a book.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Angelica Kauffman","id":"A8569"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching, ink on paper.","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NM6491"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"EE","shelf":"166","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1764","earliest":"1764-01-01","latest":"1764-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1780","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"21.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Plate mark"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Plate mark"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portrait of Johann Joachim Winckelmann by Angelica Kauffman, etching, published London 1780, made 1764.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Winckelmann, Johann Joachim","id":"A8998"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Kauffman made this etching after her own celebrated portrait of the German scholar, which launched her career in Rome in 1763.
