This high relief sculpture is executed in wax, a medium which allows for the use of colour, and the texture of which naturally suggests flesh. It was made by Wenzel Maler, one of the leading exponents of wax modelling in seventeenth-century Nuremburg, and depicts the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II. The date of 1606 may suggest that the portrait is intended to comemorate the ending of the so-called Long War against the Ottomans, which was concluded in that year.\n","physicalDescription":"Model, wax in high relief, on a painted paper background, framed and glazed, portrait of Rudolph II, Emperor of Germany.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Maler, Wenzel","id":"A11801"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wax in high relief, framed and glazed","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AG3416","2017JY2306"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"6","id":"THES49750"},"free":"","case":"CA13","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief emperor rudolph II","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nuremberg","id":"x29057"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1606","earliest":"1606-01-01","latest":"1606-12-31"},"association":{"text":"dated","id":"AAT54714"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements (H & W) from Object Card.\n\nDepth measured by Amy Mechowski, 8/2/12.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"RVDOLPH .
