His patron, Lord Bute (1713-92), advised Princess Augusta on the development of Kew, and in 1784 Brown became botanical painter to George, Prince of Wales (the future George IV). Brown’s drawings are similar in presentation to those of the renowned botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-70), under whom he may have studied.\r\n\r\nWhen Brown made this naturalistic study of wintersweet, the species was very new to Britain. It arrived from Japan in 1766, an event noted in the Botanical Magazine of that year. This explains its other name, Japanese allspice, although the plant is native to China.","physicalDescription":"Botanical study of a stalk with five leaves, and a group of three white flowers with red and yellow centres and several small yellow buds.
