Thornhill was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Devonshire to decorate several walls and ceilings, work which he carried out between 1707-8. It has been suggested that this is an alternative design for the Sabine Room but there is little in common with the realised design. It is more likely that this is a scheme for another, unknown location.\n\nThornhill has used pen and ink for the design, emphasisng the darker passages with grey wash.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in pen and ink with wash. Smith in 1891.\r\n\r\nThis drawing came to the museum as part of an album containing drawings and engravings chiefly by Thornhill. The album was dismantled and the works remounted.\r\n\r\nDuring 1707-8, Thornhill was employed at Chatsworth by William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire to paint a number of walls and ceilings, most notably in the Sabine Room. Here, he painted a vast mural depicting the Rape of the Sabine Women, which celebrated the loyalty of Hersilia to her Roman husband, against the interests of her Sabine family. This subject matter made clear reference to the Duke's support of joint monarchs William III and Mary II who he had invited, as part of the 'Immortal Seven' to depose James II during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Like Hersilia, Mary had stood by her Protestant husband in opposition to her Catholic father James.\n\nHistorically, this drawing was said to have been an alternative scheme for the Sabine Room at Chatsworth. However, there are few comparable elements and it is more likely that this is a design for another, unknown scheme.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, Design for wall decoration, possibly at Chatsworth, Derbyshire by Sir James Thornhill, pen and ink with wash, ca. 1706","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["D.17-1891"],"accessionNumberNum":"17","accessionNumberPrefix":"D","accessionYear":1891,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
