These designs, each one featuring military paraphernalia, assert the martial successes of Blenheim's owner, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Thornhill loosely outlined the composition in pencil, emphasising the design and the three-dimensionality of the panel with wash.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in wash over pencil. Smith in 1891.\r\n\r\nThis drawing came to the museum as part of an album containing drawings and engravings chiefly by Thornhill. The album was dismantled and the works remounted.\r\n\r\nThe 1st Duke and Duchess of Marlborough commissioned Thornhill to decorate the interiors of Blenheim Palace. He submitted an estimate of £1400 (roughly £345,000 today) to paint the great hall, gallery and saloon. This drawing is a design for one of the illusionistic panels decorating the walls of the great hall that would sit underneath a vast ceiling painting celebrating the Duke victories in the War of the Spanish Succession. By the time Thornhill had completed his work in the hall, the costs had grown so dramatically that the Duchess dismissed him and employed the French painter Louis Laguerre to complete the remaining work in the palace at a much reduced cost.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, Design for an illusionistic panel for the Great Hall at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire by Sir James Thornhill, wash over pencil, ca. 1716","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["D.35-1891"],"accessionNumberNum":"35","accessionNumberPrefix":"D","accessionYear":1891,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
