With an orthodox 13th century composition in mind, his designs show the church made up of two west end towers, three portals, and a crossing spire with a free use of sculptural ornamentation throughout.  After preliminary drawings though, he never completed or submitted his designs. Therefore his plans for the cathedral were not carried out in the built form.","physicalDescription":"Pencil sketches of different elements of Truro Cathedral on a piece of paper folded in half. The left half of the sheet depicts two elevations of a tower, a ground plan of the Cathedral, and an elevation of the three portals in rough pencil sketches. The right half depicts tall exterior niches drawn to scale with human figures and drafting lines. Other designs for the Cathedral are included on the other side of the same sheet of paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Burges, William (A.R.A.)","id":"A8201"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[{"text":"Gothic Revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EX1898"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"152","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1878","earliest":"1873-01-01","latest":"1882-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"65.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"53","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, Pencil, Truro Cathedral, William Burges, English, ca. 1878.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Truro","id":"x36391"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Cathedral","id":"AAT7501"},{"text":"ground plan","id":"AAT72974"},{"text":"elevation","id":"AAT100175"},{"text":"tower","id":"AAT3625"},{"text":"portal","id":"AAT76641"},{"text":"people","id":"AAT24978"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["D.291B-1891"],"accessionNumberNum":"291","accessionNumberPrefix":"D","accessionYear":1891,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
