With an orthodox 13th century composition in mind, his designs show the church made up of two west end towers, three portals, and a crossing spire with a free use of sculptural ornamentation throughout. After preliminary drawings though, he never completed or submitted his designs. Therefore his plans for the cathedral were not carried out in the built form.","physicalDescription":"Pencil, pen, watercolour and gold paint design on paper of the chancel for the Truro Cathedral. A crucifix and two sculptural figures are set in the wall above the central altar. Slim stained glass windows are depicted in groups of three in the upper storey below a peristyle ceiling. Elaborate painted decoration of angels, fleur-de-lis, and other romanesque designs cover the walls, ceiling, and columns in many colours.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Burges, William (A.R.A.)","id":"A8201"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"pen","id":"x45475"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"gold paint","id":"x30249"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, pen, watercolour, and gold paint on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Places of Worship","id":"THES253007"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[{"text":"Gothic Revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014HC4206"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"117","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1878","earliest":"1873-01-01","latest":"1882-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased, 1891.
