It is used for ‘casting’ or sprinkling sugar, salt, ground pepper and spices or dry mustard powder over food. This particular caster is very well made and was therefore probably originally silvered (covered with a thin layer of silver). \r\n\r\nBrass coated with a thin layer of silver offered a cheaper and convincing alternative to sterling silver. Cast brass with a silvered surface was a relatively common silver substitute until the discovery of Sheffield plate in 1742. This new material consisted of a thin layer of silver fused to a copper core and provided a cheaper and more versatile alternative to sterling silver. Silver, Sheffield plate and brass casters were all popular items of tableware.","physicalDescription":"Bulbous body, with moulded foot; domed lid pierced with circular holes and surmounted by an acorn knob.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},{"text":"turned","id":"AAT53158"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, cast and turned","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK4491"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES409267"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Caster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 18th century-late 18th century","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Miss Ethel Gurney","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.625","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"2.875","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brass caster with moulded foot and a lid pierced with holes and surmounted by an acron-shaped knob, English, mid - late 18th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"acorn","id":"AAT251844"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.205-1939"],"accessionNumberNum":"205","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1939,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-09","availableToBook":true}}
