The motifs of the lion’s head and feet were used by English goldsmiths from the 1690s. They may allude to the classical hero Hercules, who wrestled with a lion, or even to William III, who was sometimes personified as Hercules, the strong man.","physicalDescription":"Silver sauce boat, (one of a pair), a shaped oval body, embellished with acanthus and shell ornament, with the spout at one end and a closed scroll handle, opposite, resting on four paw feet issuing from applied lions masks between which on either side are applied festoons of flowers and fruit.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wickes, George","id":"A8985"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, cast, embossed, chased and engraved.","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Regence","id":"AAT21089"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK5902","2006AR4630"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"68 (VA)","id":"THES49730"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sauce boat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1737-1738","earliest":"1737-05-29","latest":"1738-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.27A-1948","id":"O93632"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"Arthur James Collection Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"22.10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.80","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"675.80","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Engraved with the Arms of Staples","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"maker's mark GW with a three pronged crown above, all within a close fitting shield, for George Wickes [Grimwade, 1990 no.921]  \r\nFull marks struck very cleanly on the underside of the base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquisition RF: 48/1815\nArthur James Collection Bequest (by his wife)\n\nExhibitions:\nEnglish Silver, 16th -20th Century , Moscow and Leningrad, 1978, Belgrade and Zagreb, 1980","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sauce boat, silver, London hallmarks for 1737-38, mark of George Wickes","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"coat of arms","id":"AAT126352"},{"text":"scroll","id":"x44680"},{"text":"acanthus","id":"AAT164902"},{"text":"shell","id":"x35513"},{"text":"paw","id":"AAT40650"},{"text":"lion mask","id":"x35082"},{"text":"festoons","id":"AAT167386"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"},{"text":"fruit","id":"AAT11868"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.27-1948"],"accessionNumberNum":"27","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1948,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-09","availableToBook":false}}
