Although made in Sweden, this cup was produced for the Samii (formerly 'Lapp') market.\r\n\r\nThe Museum acquired most of its collection of Scandinavian silver between 1900 and 1910. The collection consists largely of beakers and tankards, valued in Edwardian England as a Scandinavian “Arts and Crafts” tradition. George Jorck, a Danish silver dealer who worked in Hatton Garden in London, acted as agent for dealers in Copenhagen and was instrumental in acquiring many of the objects for the collection, including this cup. H. P. Mitchell of the Metalwork Department wrote in 1904, “Mr Jorck tells me large numbers are being sold to the American museums; it is pretty clear that the country districts of Sweden are being denuded rapidly and it might be well to make our gaps complete while there is this opportunity.”","physicalDescription":"Round bowled cup with gilt moulded rim terminating in band of zigzag ornament in relief, beneath which runs a band of gilding, scroll handle ribbed, inside of cup gilt, concave foot.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Löfvander, Olaf (the younger)","id":"A10904"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK9904"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"69 (VA)","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"10","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cups","id":"AAT43202"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Luleå","id":"x37894"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1806-1810","earliest":"1806-01-01","latest":"1810-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"8.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.80","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On the base: maker’s mark of Olof Lofvander the Younger (1774-1823) working in Lulea, Sweden from 1795; town mark of Lulea; control mark the 3 crown mark in force from 1754.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchase - G Jorck\n\n\nFrom Catalogue of Scandinavian and Baltic Silver, RW Lightbown, V&A, 1975, p104: Made for the Lapp market.
