Meryon began his naval career at the age of 16 and during his 10 years in the navy became increasingly interested in art. His depictions of New Zealand and Oceania are typically topographical, highlighting areas of French settlements and paying close attention to land formations, local flora and fauna. Fishing practices and ways of life are also documented. On occasion, Meryon shows colonial interactions with indigenous people, most notably in <i>New Zealand. Native barns and huts at Akaroa, Banks Peninsula</i> (E.84-1894), where an engagement between a colonial figure and a family group of Māori is occurring outside of a settlement. Meryon made a titlepage for this series (E.2387-1921), in which he described how the prints were made on the trip to New Zealand on the Navire Rhin ship under the direction of Captain Auguste Bérard, who was in charge of a French settlement at Akaroa, on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Many of Meryon’s prints depict Akaroa and its surrounding areas.\r\nCharles Meryon was a forerunner to the nineteenth century etching revival in France, and he was widely celebrated by contemporary etchers and critics writing about the etching revival. The etching revival, which occurred in France, Britain, and America, was characterised by artists reclaimed etching as an autonomous art form, aligning themselves with the tradition of the ‘peintre-graveur’ (painter-printmaker) and looking to earlier great masters of the medium, like Rembrandt.","physicalDescription":"A view of the sea, a group of figures standing in the water fishing.
