This chalice would have been originally accompanied by a paten (dish) for the consecrated bread. According to Catholic belief the wine and bread are miraculously transformed into the blood and body of Christ during the Mass. The bowls of silver chalices are usually gilded inside, to emphasize the precious nature of their contents and to protect the metal. This late medieval example is decorated with depictions of St John the Baptist, St James, the instruments of the Passion (tools associated with Christ's Crucifixion), and heraldic insignia.\r\n\r\nBefore coming to the Museum this chalice was in the private collection of J.C. Robinson, the first curator of art at the V&A, who shifted the focus of the Museum collections away from its original enthusiasm for good examples of modern design, towards historic works of art which should inspire modern manufactures. In his 15 years at the Museum, Robinson created the first public collection of medieval and Renaissance decorative art in Britain.","physicalDescription":"Chalice with plain bowl clasped by calyx and repousse scallop shells and supported on hexagonal stem, pierced with window tracery flanked by buttresses, bossed stem, with broad foot divided into 12 rays, figures.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Possibly made by an immigrant Portuguese silversmith working in Castile."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[{"text":"Gothic","id":"x30997"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2018KU9461"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"69","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"19","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chalice","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Avila (City)","id":"x33111"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1502-1515","earliest":"1502-01-01","latest":"1515-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"18.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"foot","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Struck on the foot with the town mark of Ávila.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"The arms of the Bracamonte, Dávila and Álvarez de Toledo (Dukes of Alba) families embossed on the foot.\n","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased by the South Kensington Museum from the collection of John Charles Robinson.
