It was made in the mid-nineteenth-century, probably to appeal to a wealthy collector. The enamelled pattern of foliage that decorates the casket's surface is inspired by seventeenth century fashions in ornament, but its rigid form and colouring are not characteristic of this period. The design of the feet is also uncharacteristic of the seventeenth century, when simple, ball-shaped feet were common. Moreover, their design is illogical. The feet on this casket consist of a monstrous head attached to a woman's torso, which is supported by three legs that rest on a shield-shaped plaque. These four plaques round the base of the casket are therefore not positioned in a way that would display the arms of the casket's owner, and this provides further grounds for the suspicion that the casket is of relatively recent construction.","physicalDescription":"Casket with enamel filigree panels supported on four sphinx feet.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"AAT53773"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver and enamel filigree","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Enamels","id":"THES48876"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK7509","2006AK7508","2006AK7506"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES404450"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Casket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vienna","id":"x29246"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840-1850","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver, Continental","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Berger, Ewald. <u>Prunk-Kassetten: Europäische Meisterwerke aus acht Jahrhunderten / Ornamental Caskets: Eight Centuries of European Craftsmanship.
