Central to Catholic worship is the belief in transubstantiation: that the consecrated bread and wine are miraculously converted into the body and blood of Christ during the service.\r\n\r\nThis Spanish ciborium is designed in the 'Herreran' style, named after the architect Juan Herrera, who built the Escorial palace near Madrid around 1575 for Philip II of Spain (ruled 1556-1598). Herreran goldsmiths' work is usually architectural in form, combining plain surfaces with discreet decoration. Small enamelled bosses applied to the surface added colour and broke up the austerity of the design.","physicalDescription":"Shallow bowl, decorated in the Herrera style, baluster stem and round foot with palmette toes; domed lid surmounted by a cross. The lid, bowl and foot set with light blue enamelled bosses framed with pounced scrollwork, the foot is also set with four cherubs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, silver-gilt, with enamelled bosses","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AL0164","2018KX5130"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"69","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"18","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"69","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"18","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"69","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"18","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"pyx","id":""}],[{"text":"lid of a pyx","id":""}],[{"text":"cross surmounting a pyx lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1630","earliest":"1625-01-01","latest":"1634-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Dr W.L.
