From paintings of the time we know that tazzas were used to hold fruits and sweetmeats, but this example may have been made purely for display. \r\n\r\nThe scene in the centre depicts the mythological story of Diana and Actaeon from the <i>Metamorphoses</i> by the Roman poet Ovid. Actaeon is a hunter who unwittingly stumbles across the chaste goddess Diana while she is bathing. As punishment for seeing her naked, Diana turns Actaeon into a stag and he is killed by his own hunting dogs. The scene here shows the moment of Actaeon's transformation, with antlers sprouting from his head.","physicalDescription":"The bowl with a relief scene of Diana and Actaeon, the stem formed by 3 demi-figures separated by masks, bowl ornamented outside with strapwork, masks and fruit, the foot with a coat of arms underneath.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schenauer, Jacob","id":"A10829"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mannerism","id":"AAT21144"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK9236","2018KY8412","2022NE4401"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"69","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"5","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tazza","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Augsburg","id":"x32552"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1580-1590","earliest":"1580-01-01","latest":"1590-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"20.30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bowl","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Plaque set in centre of underside of base engraved with arms surmounted by a crest, encircled by an inscription.\nThe crest: a helmet surmounted by a man holding two stars.
