It appears to date from the 17th century but it is notoriously hard to place or date filigree work, a technique in which silver wires are soldered together without a supporting background, as it is rarely marked. The enamel plaques on this casket depicting men on horseback or fighting are very unusual for the period. The romantic, historicist subject matter of some of the panels suggests that they might have been made at a later date to the rest of the casket.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular casket with half-cylinder lid, filigree panels mounted in silver-gilt wire with silver-gilt filigree flowers. 4 spherical filigree feet. 6 enamel plaques on body, 6 on lid, depicting scenes from secular life (described in the register as a picaresque story).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt, filigree and enamel mounts","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Enamels","id":"THES48876"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK9237","2006AK9238"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES404450"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Casket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Europe","id":"x28842"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"central or northern"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 17th century","earliest":"1650-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Alfred Williams Hearn Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"14.30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"TS comments: cornflower blue inside plaques like Blois.
