The lozenge-shaped ornaments suspended from the body of this cup are known as 'Lapp leaves' and other pendant shapes, such as discs, are a common feature on Norwegian drinking vessels. \r\n\r\nThe Museum acquired most of its collection of Scandinavian silver between 1900 and 1910. The collection consists largely of beakers and tankards, valued in Edwardian England as a Scandinavian “Arts and Crafts” tradition. George Jorck, a Danish silver dealer who worked in Hatton Garden in London, acted as agent for dealers in Copenhagen and was instrumental in acquiring many of the objects for the collection. H. P. Mitchell of the Metalwork Department wrote in 1904, “Mr Jorck tells me large numbers are being sold to the American museums; it is pretty clear that the country districts of Sweden are being denuded rapidly and it might be well to make our gaps complete while there is this opportunity”.","physicalDescription":"Conical beaker with narrow base on circular foot, body separated into 3 horizontal sections, chased, engraved and pounced with flowers and frosting, 2 sections separated by silver bands with suspended discs (some missing).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hind, Johan Salomon","id":"A10847"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt, chased, engraved and pounced","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK5559","2018KX0307"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"69 (VA)","id":"THES49729"},"free":"","case":"10","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beaker","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bergen (Norway)","id":"x35034"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1797","earliest":"1797-01-01","latest":"1797-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"8.60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"8.70","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"foot","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On the base of the foot: maker's mark JSH for Johan Salomon Hind (working 1792 - 1817); town mark for Bergen; warden's mark MP for Matthias Pettersen (warden 1790 - 1812); year mark 97 for 1797; month mark for 21 June - 22 July.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchase - (£14) G.
