The plate was probably made by the workshop of Maestro Giorgio di Pietro Andreoli (1465 - <i>ca.</i>1553). The simple floral decoration on the reverse of the plate is realised in metallic lustre work, a technique that was first used for maiolica in Italy by Maestro Giorgio. \r\n\r\nThe fine gold-toned photograph emphasises the iridescent qualities of the lustre decoration. It is not clear who took the photograph. Charles Thompson was the first official photographer for the South Kensington Museum, the forerunner of the V&A. But since the plate cannot be identified with any of the many works by Maestro Giorgio in the V&A, this photograph may be the work of Thompson’s teacher, Robert Bingham, who was based in Paris.","physicalDescription":"Purple-sepia photograph of the reverse of plate","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Thompson, Charles Thurston","id":"A7240"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Bingham, Robert Jefferson","id":"A11729"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Albumen process","id":"AAT133274"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen-silver print","categories":[{"text":"Majolica","id":"THES48923"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Maiolica","id":"THES49023"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG1546"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"37","box":"D"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1856","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"22.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stanhope, W.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Unlimited edition","id":"THES48868"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Processes and Techniques","id":"AAT53001"},{"text":"Object Genres","id":"AAT185711"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["36792"],"accessionNumberNum":"36792","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-07","availableToBook":false}}
