The letter ‘L’ is created by the <i>Linnaea borealis</i> (twinflower), the flower of Linnaeus’ coat of arms.\r\n\r\nLinnaeus introduced the consistent use of binomial terms for both plants and animals. In this system of classification every name has two parts, the first for the genus and the second for the species. Linnaeus added his initial ‘L’ after the names of plants that he was the first to describe.
