He made photographs of the produce and flowers he grew, but he did not exhibit or publish them. His photographs might easily have been forgotten. But in 1981 the writer, collector and photography dealer Sean Sexton bought a trunk of them at Bermondsey antique market in London. He subsequently promoted the photographer’s reputation internationally.\r\n\r\nJones did not develop his prints chemically, a process that produces black and white prints. Instead, he printed them by sunlight - hence their warm and subtle tonality.","physicalDescription":"Sepia photograph of two onions placed in a basket","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jones, Charles","id":"A11736"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Gelatin silver process","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin-silver print on gold-toned printing out paper","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG1540"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"950","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1895-1910","earliest":"1890-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Charles Jones, 'Onions', gelatin silver print, ca. 1900.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Private","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"still life","id":"x35544"},{"text":"Vegetable","id":"x33491"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.269-1981"],"accessionNumberNum":"269","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":1981,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-07","availableToBook":false}}
