The objects, however, suffered from this treatment. Thus he commissioned photographic reproductions to circulate instead. The first trial with Daguerreotypes failed, because these were relatively fragile and also suffered from frequent moving. (Daguerrotype was the first commercially available form of photography, introduced in 1839. Each photograph was a one-off, appearing on a silvered copper plate.) In 1853 Minutoli engaged Ludwig Belitski to make a photographic reproduction on paper. Belitski was a photographer from Liegnitz in Silesia (now Legnica, Poland). He earned international fame from Minutoli’s large commission (seven folio-sized volumes with 663 plates) and won awards in Brussels and Amsterdam in 1855 and 1856. The Venetian glass here was photographed in bright sunlight.","physicalDescription":"A mounted photograph of various glass objects including glasses and a vase.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Belitski, Ludwig","id":"A6437"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Minutolischen Institut zur Veredlung der Gewerbe und Beförderung der Künste (Liegnitz)","id":"AUTH348540"},"association":{"text":"commissioned by","id":"x28662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"salted paper processes","id":"AAT53495"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Salted paper print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB4325","2018KU1789","2018KU3617","2018KU3969"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"285","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"salted paper print","id":"AAT127149"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Liegnitz","id":"x37880"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1855","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by The Prince Consort","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"330","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"270","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"220","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"175","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"<u>'Vases</u> etc. / Institut Minutoli, Lignitz'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"ink, lower right mount"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"partial blindstamp, upper centre mount"},{"content":"'3.2.7'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"pencil and ink, lower centre mount"},{"content":"'x. 285 / LEIGNITZ / Minutolisches / Institut'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"printed label, upper right mount"},{"content":"'Minutoli. / Vorbilder fur Handwerker. / Par. 3 / 1855.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"stamp, verso mount"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"In 1855 Prince Albert donated Models for Craftsmen, photographed by Ludwig Belitski, published by the Minutolische Institut, Liegnits, Silesia","briefDescription":"Photograph by Ludwig Belitski, 'Vases, etc., Institut Minutoli, Liegnitz', salted paper print, ca. 1855","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Julius Bryant, ed. <u>Art and Design for All.
