The turquoises and corals sewn onto the headdress represented not only ornamentation but also a portable store of a woman’s wealth that could be sold piecemeal if required. Peraks were worn on important ritual occasions and passed down the generations from mother to daughter, usually at the time of a girl’s marriage.
