Like many such brackets, this one was probably gilded originally, but was stripped in the late 19th or early 20th century. \r\n\r\nIt is one of several hundred carvings given to the Museum in 1921 by Sir Charles Allom and his wife, in memory of their son, who died in the First World War. Sir Charles headed White Allom & Co., one of the most successful firms of architectural decorators in Britain, specialising in the copying of historic styles. Between 1900 and 1914 he also began to work for clients in the United States and after the First World War he spent time in both countries. The collection of carvings seems to have been put together as a study collection for his son, perhaps in the expectation that he would follow in his father's footsteps and take over the firm.","physicalDescription":"A bracket of carved lime, the shelf with a concave front edge, the edge carved with formal motifs, the supporting frame carved centrally with the mask of a woman with flowers in her hair, set against a shaped cartouche, this flanked on each side by a scrolled support set with a male mask. The bracket is missing sections of carving. It was probably originally gessoed and gilded but has been stripped.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lime","id":"AAT11736"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved lime","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Regence","id":"AAT21089"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BB1211"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001A","id":"THES390124"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bracket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1730","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Charles and Lady Allom in memory of their son, Lieutenant Cedric Allom RFA","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20-8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"42.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"18","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked on the object July 2009","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Part of a collection of carving that was presented to the Museum by Sir Charles and Lady Allom of Trowbridge, Herts, in memory of thier only son, a student of Wellington College and Trinity College Cambridge, who fell in the Ypres Salient on October 9th 1917 and died of wounds, October 20th aged 21 years.\r\n\r\nThe acquisition record for this bracket does not record damage","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bracket of carved limewood, with a central cartouche carved with a female head, between S-scrolled supporting consoles","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Possibly made ca. 1850 in early 18th-century style.
