The dark base fabric is of indigo-dyed linen, with spectacular silk-thread embroidery on the front and back of the garment, and silk and taffeta applique panels decorating the inner lining. These would have been visible as a woman walked and the coat flapped open, or meant the entire piece was reversible. The garment is an example of Palestinian tatreez - elaborate hand-embroidery on clothing and accessories - a practice and craft which was characterised by remarkable complexity and regional diversity across Palestine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
