The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is a <font i>Meiping</font> jar form with a dome-shaped stopper.\r\nIt is made of porcelain, painted in underglaze blue. The stopper is made of a brown material, perhaps resin, set in metal.\r\nThe decoration depicts a pine tree, nandina and possibly wintersweet. Also eight birds, a flying insect and magic fungus. There is a debased spearhead border at the neck, with two blue lines around the base of the neck.\r\nIt does not have a separate foot and there is a high curved indentation underneath with a four-character Yongzheng (1723-35) mark in blue.\r\nPine, nandina, called <font i>tianzhu</font> meaning 'heavenly bamboo' and wintersweet, which resembles prunus, are sometimes combined as a reference to the 'Three Friends of Winter' - pine, bamboo and prunus.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EC4216","2006AU9155"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"7","box":""},{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Snuff bottle","id":""}],[{"text":"Stopper","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1796-1850","earliest":"1796-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Transferred from the Museum of Practical Geology","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the Museum of Practical Geology (Jermyn Street, London), accessioned in 1901.
