This translates as ‘Yokoyama Sukekane, resident of Osafune in Bizen province’ (modern-day Okayama Prefecture). Some of the characters in the rest of the inscription are obscured: ‘Tomonari gojuhachi dai mago…nen…gatsu hi’ - ‘58th generation grandchild [descendant] of Tomonari, a day in ?month of ?year’. The blade dates from around 1860-1870. \r\n\r\nThe distinctive tempered edge (‘hamon’) featuring Mount Fuji with the sun on one side and Mount Fuji with the moon on the other, together with a ‘clenched fist’ (‘ko-bushi’) pattern, features on several other tanto blades by Sukekane. Blades of the 19th-century Yokoyama school frequently declared their lineage as being directly descended from the 13th-century smith Tomonari.\r\n\r\nThe hilt and scabbard are of wood or wood bark with emphasised grain and are decorated with metal ants and other details in silver, gold, copper and natural horn.","physicalDescription":"Japanese dagger (tanto)","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sukekane","id":"A11685"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BC9346","2006AM9376","2006AM9377","2006AM9375","2006AM9374","2006AM9373"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"017","id":"THES364522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"017","id":"THES364522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"017","id":"THES364522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Scabbard","id":""}],[{"text":"Dagger","id":""}],[{"text":"kozuka","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Osafune","id":"x35359"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1870","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Ernest A.
