The fisherman sways precariously on his “river bank” when touched, while the comical bird attempts to catch the “fly” when his body is rocked to and fro.\r\n\r\nTony Mann was voted “Toymaker of the Year” by the British Toymakers’ Guild for both 1987 and 1988. He originally trained as an industrial designer and worked in this field for twenty years in both this country and Canada, (where he emigrated in 1962.) He later set up degree courses at the College of Art and Design in Nova Scotia where he still teaches one term a year. The rest of the year is devoted to toymaking, and , when in England, he is based at Chulmleigh, Devon.\r\n","physicalDescription":"This toy is in the shape of a bird with a long neck, made from roughly carved wood and painted in various shades of blue and green with white and grey areas; and purple, cerise, orange and gold areas. Has an upturned wing nailed to each side of the body and two flat wood tulips, painted orange, yellow and pink protruding from the top of the bird's tail. The body is hooked on to a length of copper wire threaded with blue and pink wooden beads, which in turn rests inside a groove in two vertical wooden pieces (the bird's legs) on a flat purple painted wooden stand. The bottom beak is hinged and a purple wooden bead with two orange feathers and an insect hangs from a length of white thread attached to an L shaped piece of copper wire which protrudes from the bird's head. When the bird is gently pushed, the body rocks to and fro; the beak opens and closes attempting to catch the insect.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mann, Tony","id":"A11068"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"beads","id":"x32809"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand carved","id":"x30667"},{"text":"painting image making","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-carved and paintrf wood, metal and beads","categories":[{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006AF4947"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343529"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Rocking Bird","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1988","earliest":"1988-01-01","latest":"1988-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"47","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Tony Mann '88 is handwritten in black ink on the base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Rocking bird toy made by Tony Mann in England in 1988","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Limited edition","id":"THES48862"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["MISC.27-1988"],"accessionNumberNum":"27","accessionNumberPrefix":"MISC","accessionYear":1988,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2004-02-03","availableToBook":false}}
