This painting was bequeathed to the V&A by Isabel Constable, John Constable’s daughter, in 1888. Freud attempted to copy it when he was a student, but gave up because it was so difficult. This print, made decades later and titled <i>After Constable's \"Elm\"</i>, can be understood as an artist’s response to another artist’s work, with Freud offering a comment on the Constable painting: the 21st century addressing the 19th. \r\n\r\nThe V&A lent extensively to a retrospective of the works of John Constable chosen by Lucian Freud, which was held in Paris in 2002. The French catalogue for this exhibition included a conversation between Freud and William Feaver, the exhibition curator. The British Council reprinted a translation of the conversation in the book <i>Freud on Constable</i>. Lucian Freud made this new etching specially for the book.","physicalDescription":"A print showing a tree trunk with a forest in the background.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Freud, Lucian","id":"A11665"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Somerset textured paper","id":"x37853"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BH4750"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2003","earliest":"2003-01-01","latest":"2003-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"786-1888","id":"O16555"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"E.14-2009","id":"O188146"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Purchased through the Julie and Robert Breckman Print Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"48","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"31","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'40/46 L.F'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"under the image","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"1) Makers's mark","note":"1) Makers's mark; under the image"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lucian Freud, After Constable's Elm, etching, 2003","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Tree, Elm","id":"x31498"},{"text":"forests","id":"AAT8863"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"homage","id":"x37957"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Though best known as a painter, Freud also worked extensively with etching.
