It was more practical to use a barrel tap or spigot like this one to pour out the drink as and when it was needed, either into a decanter for the table or directly into glasses. This barrel tap, which is carved from pearwood to resemble a dolphin, fits into the bung hole of a barrel. The flow of liquid can be controlled by means of a pin with a scallop-shell terminal which blocks the pipe.","physicalDescription":"Carved pearwood barrel tap in the form of a dolphin's head with a regulating pin terminating in a scallop shell.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pearwood","id":"x34734"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand carving","id":"x34992"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved pearwood","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BB1253"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"016","id":"THES302031"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Barrel tap","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1730","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by W.
