A nutcracker like this would have been used mainly for cracking hazelnuts, cob nuts or almonds, as walnuts were usually cracked with the teeth at this date and brazil nuts had not yet been discovered by Europeans. \r\n\r\nThis carved fruitwood example is topped by a grotesque figure wearing a cap of liberty, the hat associated with radicals during the French Revolution. This makes it possible to date the nutcracker quite closely.","physicalDescription":"Nutcracker carved of fruitwood with screw mechanism, surmounted by a grotesque figure wearing a cap of liberty.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fruitwood","id":"AAT137731"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand carving","id":"x34992"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved fruitwood","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BB1250","2017JV0550"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302424"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Nutcracker","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1789-1800","earliest":"1789-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr A.E.
