It is also a testimonial to Giovanni Battista Foggini's artistic prowess. Foggini was contracted to supply a relief for the high altar in 1677. It was in place when the chapel was consecrated in 1683.\r\n\r\nThe present relief is based on a larger presentation drawing that is now in the Louvre in Paris. Foggini accurately translated the painterly qualities of the drawing into clay. He has rearranged some of the ancillary figures and isolated St Andrea's communion with the Virgin Mary more effectively. He has also given greater prominence to the high altar and the architectural backdrop. Changes between the terracotta and the marble are slight. They include the extended gesture of the Virgin's right arm, the altered gaze of the angel directly above the saint, and the more subdued pose of the kneeling man on the lower right.","physicalDescription":"Sketch model, terracotta. On an oblong panel in the middle, the saint stands before an altar gazing upwards at the Virgin who is shown seated with the Child in clouds to the right, attended by Angels and cherubs. In the background to the left, kneeling and standing there are four figures of servers, while on the altar steps in the foreground to the right are three adoring figures. The terracotta bears on the back a badly defaced label with faded inscription in ink.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Foggini, Giovanni Battista","id":"A11496"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2011FC7328","2006AL6104","2017JW1083"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES396112"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Model first mass of saint andrea corsini","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1685-1686","earliest":"1680-01-01","latest":"1689-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased by the John Webb Trust","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"39.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"........originale\r\n........Baptiste Fogg in illustre\r\n........1683\r\n.........Ste Vierge.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased for £25 for Dr. L.T Sands.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Terracotta model of the Mass of St. Andrea Corsini by Giovanni Battista Foggini, Italy, (Florence), ca. 1685-1686","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Boucher, Bruce, (ed.), <i>Earth and Fire, Italian Sculpture from Donatello to Canova</i> New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 2001","id":"AUTH353458"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Richa. <u>Notizie historiche della Chiese</u> Florentine. 1762.
