The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is in the form of a garlic mouthed case with no stopper.\r\nIt is a made of porcelain, painted in dark blue under a paler blue glaze.\r\nThe decoration depicts pine, bamboo and prunus, with an insect.\r\nThe high splayed foot has a smaller rim underneath and a high curved indentation.\r\nThe pine, bamboo and prunus form a popular decorative motif 'Three Friends of Winter', since the pine and the bamboo are evergreen and the prunus blossoms very early.\r\nThis bottle has a cork and could have been made as a snuff bottle, although written evidence suggests that glass was the earliest material used for making snuff bottles. It is more likely that the bottle was adapted for snuff use sometime after its manufacture.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"glazing (coating)","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, with decoration painted under a glaze","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EC4343","2006AU9143"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"SNUFF BOTTLE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Boone Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. Thomas Boone, per Mrs. Temple (24 Ulster Place, Regents Park.), accessioned in 1903.
