At that time the city was a flourishing centre of production of brassware. The decoration on these brass pieces was strongly influenced by the goods Venetian merchants brought back to the city from the Turkish and Arab empires. \r\n\r\nThe local craftsmen adopted the deep, bold engraving of the Islamic models but only very occasionally used the silver inlay that was a speciality of the Saracen artists. They also incorporated the arabesque pattern seen here, based on a stylised plant with a winding stem.
