Wendy Salmond comments (March 2004) that it could have come from one of the kustar depots operating in London around 1907; such places sold 'traditional' lace and embroidery [newly] made under gentry supervision. She says our piece seems to be one of a group generically close, in which the lace technique and use of colour is traditional, but the design seems to be an early 20th c interpretation of an old tradition generally associated with Kaliazin in Tver Province, although it comes out of actual folk lace making.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Towel end of linen with bobbin lace in linen, silk and metal thread, Russian, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["497-1907"],"accessionNumberNum":"497","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1907,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-22","recordCreationDate":"2004-01-28","availableToBook":false}}
