It was known for its high quality of illustrations, which Caldecott contributed to from 1872 to 1886. He wrote illustrated both semi-factual observational travel pieces and fictional comics and stories. Caldecott’s illustrations were often printed in colour, or his signature brown, which made them stand out amongst the black and white of the rest of the newspaper.","physicalDescription":"Proof prints of pages 360 and 353 from <i>The Graphic</i> October 11th 1879 issue, featuring part of the story 'Sketches at Trouville'. The two pages are mounted separately. \nOn the left hand, page 360, the three largest illustrations depict general beach scenes, showing the use of peignoirs (bathrobes) and bathing-cabins, and there is a central section with three outlined panels. The first oval panel depicts a woman wearing a dress with a lacy high neckline and a voluminous hat, topped with a stuffed mouse. The second rectangular panel depicts a more distant view of part of a beach with flags. The third rectangular panel depicts two men swimming with a flag and an umbrella. \nOn the right hand, page 353, the two main illustrations depict general beach scenes, with a variety of beach-goers on the sand and in the water. In the illustration at the top of a page, the title is integrated into the design through a board on the beach.
