Whilst there have been many interpretations of the story since, Caldecott's is true to the original text and maintains its dark tone. The story follows two children whom, upon their parents' deaths, are entrusted to their uncle. Their uncle attempts to have them killed and, whilst this plan fails, they end up wondering alone in the woods until their death. 'The Babes in the Woods' is a morality tale, and it ends with a warning to all those entrusted with looking after the children of others; 'the heavy wrath of God' befalls the uncle and he dies in jail.\n\nThese proofs are for some of the full page illustrations in the book, which were eventually printed in full colour.","physicalDescription":"Proof print of an illustration depicting an ill couple in bed.
