A Story in Four Chirps</i>, by Hannah Jane Locker-Lampson, was published in 1881 by George Routledge & Sons. There was some indecision as to if James Davis Cooper or Edmund Evans should make the wood engravings to print the illustrations from. Both men were close collaborators of illustrator Randolph Caldecott, who eventually recommended Cooper. Birds were one of Caldecott’s favourite subjects, appearing across his illustrations, paintings and interior design work.
