Like many other games, Dominoes was popular in both Italy and France before spreading through mainland Europe to England. \r\n\r\nThe principle behind Dominoes where cards, small bars or tiles must be arranged into sequences, was used as a foundation for various different games. Many of these were produced, particularly in the 19th century, for both children and families to play with. This is an early set and its tiles are unusual in that the spots go up to nine rather than the usual six.","physicalDescription":"Lacquered wooden box with sliding lid decorated on all four sides and the lid which shows a seated woman and two children playing. There are fifty-one dominoes in total, comprising two different sets. One has twenty-seven and is made of wooden bases and bone tops held together with metal pins. The spots on this set go up to nine. The second set is of inferior quality, being of wood with one surface painted. There are twenty-four of these and they follow the more usual design of a six spot maximum.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"Bone","id":"AAT11798"},{"text":"Metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquering","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lacquered wood, carved bone, metal, paint","categories":[{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"},{"text":"Play","id":"THES274366"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006AA7105","2006AP8693"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES324710"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CA001","id":"THES388348"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dominoes","id":"AAT211090"}],[{"text":"display arrangement","id":"THES383839"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1800","earliest":"1795-01-01","latest":"1804-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Henton","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"14.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"box","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"10.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"box","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"box","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dominoes dims for each of the 2 sets are as follows: painted wood set: 44x20x6mm; set with bone: 42x21x9mm","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Boxed set of dominoes made in England about 1800","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"women","id":"AAT25943"},{"text":"children","id":"AAT25945"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["MISC.80-1963","MISC.80TEMP1-1963"],"accessionNumberNum":"80","accessionNumberPrefix":"MISC","accessionYear":1963,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-20","recordCreationDate":"2004-01-27","availableToBook":false}}
