About 1781\r\nPencil, pen and ink and watercolour\r\n\r\nThomas Sandby, brother to the watercolourist\r\nPaul Sandby, was the first Professor of\r\nArchitecture at the Royal Academy. This\r\ndesign is one of a series linked to a lecture\r\ndiagram used at the Academy and to drawings\r\nexhibited at the Academy in 1781. Intended to\r\nbe erected on the site of the present Waterloo\r\nBridge, Sandby's bridge was inpsired by a \r\nprint of 1743 by the Roman architect G.B.\r\nPiranesi, as well as a number of bridges  built in\r\nEnglish parks, all of them descended from\r\nPalladio's idea of a triumphal bridge.\r\nThrough the arch on the left can be seen the\r\nterrace of Somerset House (home of the \r\nRoyal Academy); in the foreground is a\r\npalatial riverside building of Sandby's own\r\ninvention.\r\n\r\nD.822-1899","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["D.822-1899"],"accessionNumberNum":"822","accessionNumberPrefix":"D","accessionYear":1899,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
