The next day the father brought the three daughters naked before the King, and declared that if he wished to seduce one he would kill them all, but that if he wanted to marry one he might make his choice. The King married the second daughter. The composition recalls the Judgement of Paris, and is probably a historicising relief of the 18th century echoing the style of 16th centuty reliefs.","physicalDescription":"In the foreground the King of Mercia lies asleep on the ground; behind him stand the three daughters in flowing robes, the furthest to the right wearing the gown open in front. To the left is a running fountain and above it the figure of William of Albanac appearing half-length in cloud, crowned and holding the orb and sceptre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Plaques & Plaquettes","id":"THES49031"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AD1402"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"021","id":"THES395766"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medallion","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the Salting bequest.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medallion, bronze, the Legend of the King of Mercia and the Daughters of Albanac, French, probably 18th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Salting Bequest (A. 70 to A. 1029-1910) / Murray Bequest (A. 1030 to A. 1096-1910)'.
